Tone 2 releases Gladiator 1.0

Tone2 has released a new VST synth called Gladiator. It's a very powerful beast, based on Harmonic Content Morphing (HCM). What's that? According to their website, it is "...a new synthesis method is based on a large and expandable repertoire of standard waves like pulse, unique synthetic waveforms as well as resynthesis waves like trumpets, organs, pianos and voice samples. These waves can be modified in real-time by e.g. FM modulation, altering its harmonic structure, syncing, waveshaping,...
Any modification of a wave can be modulated producing lively shimmery sounds (recall: with only one oscillator!). In total there are more than 30,000 different spectra available for combination and modulation."

Whatever the tech behind Gladiator is, it sounds absolutely great, comes with more than 700 presets and allows a lot of tweaking. For what Gladiator does, the synth is pretty light on CPU and - in my opinion - one of th best instruments out there now.

Tone 2 offers a demo, so you can have a look at what Gladiator offers. Price tag is $199,-.

NI updates Reaktor to 5.1.4

It might be of interest for some of you that Native Instruments has updated Reaktor to 5.1.4, bringing better compatibility to their newly released Kore 2 (which, btw, is much better than Kore 1 and a real workhorse in my setup now) and some minor bug fixes - like increased stability on Macs. Also, load times have been improved greatly. Fire up your service center and get this latest release, it's worth the download.

First of all, let me say I am sorry for my long absence on the front page of this site. I was extremely busy with my job over the last six months, and that prevented me from actively managing the site the way I wanted to do that. Nevertheless, I was active in the background, taking care of technical things and keeping the site up and running. I am glad to say that no downtime occured and access was unrestricted. Questions and requests from our fellow musicians were answered within the day, and when problems with an account arose, we managed to bring things back to normal within 24 hours.
From now on, this front page will be updated regularly again, and promotional efforts will pick up. Thanks for your understanding, and enjoy the site.

Focusrite Liquid Mix V2.0 available

A very useful update to Focusrite Liquid Mix has happened last weekend. Biggest item for most will be the adjustable latency. The update is free for existing users. Without much ado, here's their newsbit:

Focusrite are pleased to announce that the award-winning multi-channel DSP-based EQ and Compression tool, Liquid Mix, has now stepped up a gear with the release of brand new version 2.0 software, available as a free download from the website. The software provides some extremely useful improvements and several solutions to popular requests from Liquid Mix users, including enhanced interaction between software and hardware, as well as expanded latency options.

First up is the implementation of a side-chain facility, allowing for de-essing or other frequency-selective compression. Pressing the ‘side-chain’ button in any of the 32 instances of Liquid Mix activates an eighth EQ band, which appears on the EQ graph within the software window and can be selected as low-, high- or band-pass, alongside frequency, gain and Q settings. This side-chain band can be monitored separately and then sent to the compressor with the touch of a button.

Another key improvement involves the relationship between the Liquid Mix hardware control surface and each of the active software instances. Version 2.0 ensures that the hardware can now follow (as a default setting) whichever instance of the Liquid Mix plug-in is active on the screen.

Liquid Mix version 2.0 also delivers the ability to adjust latency settings. This potentially enables Liquid Mix to be used as a tracking processor, since latency figures have now been reduced by up to 75%. It also allows the user to set a minimum latency from one of 6 options, spanning 264 to 8200 samples and ensuring operation with those DAWs that only offer fixed buffer sizes above 2056 samples (such as Bias Peak, Steinberg WaveLab, Adobe Audition, Sony Sound Forge, Vegas and ACID). Lastly, the Liquid Mix sample rate settings can now be changed without having to worry about any open instances of the software. When the sample rate is changed, all instances will reconfigure according to the new settings.
